Verity00:00
Welcome back to Creative Frequencies. I’m your host Verity Okafor, and today we have two incredible guests joining me — Kira Synthesis, a Berlin-based electronic musician, and Riku Mattila, a ceramicist from Helsinki.
Kira01:24
Thanks so much for having me. This is actually the first podcast I’ve done where I get to talk about the intersection of sound and physical materials, which is something I’ve been thinking about for years.
Riku02:08
Same here. And honestly, hearing about Kira’s process before this recording was kind of mind-blowing because there are so many parallels with ceramics that I’d never considered. The way clay responds to pressure is almost like the way a waveform responds to compression.
Verity03:15
That’s such a fascinating framing. Kira, let’s start with your background — you were classically trained before moving into electronic music. How did that transition happen?
Kira04:22
Yeah, I studied piano at the Berlin Conservatory for six years. And I loved it, but I always felt constrained by the notation — by the idea that music was something that had to be written before it could be felt. Electronic music gave me the freedom to work backwards from sensation.
Verity06:44
Riku, you collaborated with Kira on the Night Cities soundtrack — which actually premiered on The Grid. last week. How did that come about?
Riku07:02
Kira posted a brief on The Grid. Studio asking for a visual artist who was interested in sound-reactive ceramic installation. I saw it and thought — that’s exactly what I’ve been trying to describe for two years and couldn’t.
